How do we grade stamps?

- The process begins with a thorough examination of the stamp’s centering. Centering refers to the placement of the stamp’s design within its perforations or edges. A stamp with perfect centering is highly prized, with its design symmetrically positioned, neither too close to one edge nor appearing off-balance. Grades are given based on this symmetry, ranging from “Superb” for perfectly centered stamps to “Average” for those noticeably off-center.
- Next, the condition of the stamp’s perforations is assessed. Perforation integrity is crucial, as any irregularities can significantly affect the stamp’s value. Expert graders examine whether the perforations are full, intact, and uniformly shaped, noting any missing, shortened, or uneven perforations, which might downgrade the stamp’s overall grade.
- The stamp’s color plays a significant role in its grading. Authentic colors should be vibrant and consistent with the issue; fading, bleeding, or discoloration can result in a lower grade. Collectors often seek stamps with colors that remain true to the original issue, reflecting care and ideal storage conditions over the years.
- Another critical factor in grading is the stamp’s gum, if it originally possessed any. The presence and condition of the original gum can heavily influence the stamp’s grade. Stamps with original, undisturbed gum are considered premium, whereas those with gum that has been redistributed, damaged, or soaked off, are subject to lower grades.
- In addition to these physical characteristics, the presence of cancellations or other markings is carefully analyzed. For used stamps, a light, well-placed cancellation that does not obscure the stamp’s design is preferable. Heavy, “killer” cancellations or those that cover key features can detract from a stamp’s desirability and lower its grade. Conversely, unused stamps should be free of cancellations entirely.
- In addition to these physical characteristics, the presence of cancellations or other markings is carefully analyzed. For used stamps, a light, well-placed cancellation that does not obscure the stamp’s design is preferable.
